Water-based general maintenance
VMS has always specialised in water based tree works, therefore it was only natural that after seeing multiple successful results over miles of water courses, that our clients approached us to bring these high standards of work and our outstanding safety approach and record to ground maintenance and channel maintenance works. Our experience and expertise mean that we now successfully manage over 50 different water and river systems.
The VMS approach
The VMS approach, as ever, concentrates on delivering a high-quality service, focussing on the needs of the individual case. Maintenance needs are carefully evaluated and planned to ensure that the client has a scheduled scheme of works to ensure maintenance is carried out to the highest specification possible to budget and timescale.
Works carried out include summer and winter maintenance checks that consist of cutting back vegetation and removing blockages, both natural and manmade, to improve flow; maintaining in-channel vegetation and banks to client agreed standards to allow systems to perform as they should; and cutting flood banks and hard defences to secure integrity of the defence and allow for inspections.
With most maintenance being carried out during the summer months and the possible interaction with animal and insect species, all our operatives are also trained in ecology awareness; this includes habitat potential, and training in invasive species methodology and responses when working on our watercourses.
Successfully maintaining over 50 different river and water systems
Competence wise Ground maintenance requires as much training and mentoring as tree works for delivery to be to the highest standard and safety. Our inhouse operatives therefore hold a vast array of competencies from basic blower, hedge cutter and strimmer tickets to bank mowers, remote flails, amphibious plant and excavator attached flail heads, weed buckets and grinders.
Additionally, our water based teams are at least level 2 trained in water based safety to mitigate the risks of completing tree works and vegetation clearance along a water course. We also have power boat and safety boat operatives available to ensure that we can work in a range of water courses. Our teams are also protected with the highest quality PPE including top of the range waders and fast auto inflation life jackets, enabling them to work safely and concentrate on providing our high quality service.
In just two years operating VMS water based ground maintenance we now have teams nationally maintaining channels and banks totalling almost 50 different river and water systems multiple times a season.
